Weekly Specials, February 22, 2009

Hi Everyone,

We had a great week last week in Marco. Last night we flew into snow and drove home on icy roads, but the week was worth it. My grandson loved every minute of it.

If you travel to Marco, there is an excursion well worth the money. The Calusa Spirit sails every day at noon on shelling and dolphin watching excursions. This modified pontoon can hold up to 48 passengers although there were only 20 on our cruise. We cruised to an island and spent an hour shelling and then watched a large pod of dolphins playing right next to our boat. A bonus was the sighting of a bald eagle and its young in their nest. We've been on several shelling excursions. This was one of the best.

News:
Spirit Airlines has a promotion that runs only until February 24. You can take $50 off your fare on flights in March. The promo code is SAVE50.

Cruise News:
There is still availability for spring break cruising. Holland America is offering a 7 day Eastern Caribbean cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale starting at $549 on March 29.

Princess is still promoting their balcony bonanza until the end of this month. Purchase an outside stateroom and get upgraded to a balcony at no additional charge.
Princess also has a 2 for 1 sail on many of their Alaskan and European itineraries, but must book by March 31.

An alternative to Florida ports is New York City. Princess is promoting a 9 day Caribbean cruise out of New York. These cruises are eligible for the balcony upgrade.

All Inclusives:
Cheap Caribbean.com is promoting 3,4, and 5 nights to Mexico and the Caribbean and will even give you $100 back if it rains while you are on vacation this spring.

Last week, someone asked me whether or not they could take their knitting needles with them on their flight. Here is the answer straight from the TSA:

Transporting Knitting Needles & Needlepoint

Traveling with Special Items

Knitting needles are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage. However, there is a possibility that the needles can be perceived as a possible weapon by one of our Security Officers. Our Security Officers have the authority to determine if an item could be used as a weapon and may not allow said item to pass through security. We recommend the following when bring knitting needles on an airplane:

  • Circular knitting needles are recommended to be less than 31 inches in total length
  • We recommend that the needles be made of bamboo or plastic (Not Metal)
  • Scissors must have blunt points
  • In case a Security Officer does not allow your knitting tools through security it is recommended that you carry a self addressed envelope so that you can mail your tools back to yourself as opposed to surrendering them at the security check point.

Most of the items needed to pursue a Needlepoint project are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage with the exception of circular thread cutters or any cutter with a blade contained inside. These items cannot be taken through a security checkpoint. They must go in your checked baggage.

Hi Everyone,
As I write this I am enjoying the sunshine at Marco Island. I inserted a little video at the end of this blog so you can see what things look like down here if a journey to Marco is in your future.

Signing up for email specials from different airlines is a really good thing to do. Right now on AirTran's Net Escapes there is a $25 coupon. Spirit Airlines sends emails a couple of times a week informing their customers of the latest sales. There is no charge to subscribe to these lists and it can pay dividends for you.

Weekly Travel Specials, February 8

Hi Everyone,

Las Vegas is still churning out the specials. Among the recent finds:
  • MGM: $52 a night
  • Monte Carlo: $60 a night
  • Luxor: The more people you bring, the less you pay: 4 people in a room=$11 per person
  • New York, New York: Room rates discounted up to 30%
  • Wynn and Encore: $129 a night (This is a very luxurious resort).
Golf courses in and around Vegas are also feeling the pinch and have reduced their course fees, some significantly.

Cruises:
Norwegian Cruise Line: $99 rate for children and up to $250 onboard credit when you book by March 15.
Princess Cruise Line: Balcony Bonanza still available. Pay for an outside cabin and get upgraded to a balcony.
Holland America: Spring Break 7 day Eastern or Western Caribbean: $899 for a balcony cabin.
Celebrity: End of March: Eastern Caribbean: $899 for a balcony cabin.

If you are still thinking of traveling for Spring Break, it would be wise to get those reservations now. It will be very difficult to get decent airfare the closer we get to the end of March or first week of April.

Weekly Travel Specials, February 2, 2010

Hi Everyone,
We had a great time in NYC. We ate in great restaurants and saw a wonderful play. The only downside was a very icy ride home from Detroit.

Things seem to have calmed a little after the very frenetic round of discounts we've seen the last few weeks. There are a few things of note, however:
  • Spirit Airlines is offering $48 off for 48 hours for travel on any of their flights through December. Just paste 48HOURS into the promo box. Must be a member of the $9 Fare Club to get the full $48 but nonmembers will receive $30. Must book by midnight, February 2.
  • Last week I told you of a Regent Cruise Line special. Another luxury line, Oceania, is offering $2000 off, 2 for 1 fares, and free airfare on select sailings.
  • Princess Cruises is offering great deals on their Alaska sailings. They also have a great price on a 38 day segment of their world cruise. NYC to Dubai with free one way air for $6999 oceanview cabin.
  • Staying closer to home? Sheraton and Westin is offering specials for Valentine's/President's Weekend. Stay one night, get the second 50% off at their Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin hotels.
